• Bible Christian Chapel

Simple in structure and furnishings, this 1853 Chapel was built by a splinter group of Methodists known as the Bible Christians. It originally sat on Lot 24, Concession 5, but was moved to the William Major farm around 1890 after the Chapel closed. The box pulpit, wainscoting, and front doors are original. This is also a popular location for weddings and filming.

In 2001 The Pickering Museum Village Foundation took the lead in refurbishing the interior of the building. With the assistance of a grant from Benjamin Moore Paints, pews were re-created by local carpenter and future PMV volunteer, Bill Gosse, using one original as the template. Volunteers painted the interior and faux wood grained the pews. Local blacksmith, Mark Puigmarti, created the hanging, wrought iron light fixtures.

Mark and his wife Christine attended one of the 1996 events at the museum village and had a long talk with volunteer blacksmith and storyteller, Dennis Mann. Mark feels that this meeting was a key component to changing his life. To show his appreciation of the guidance he received at the museum village, when he heard of the restoration of the Chapel he contacted Dave Marlowe, PMV Education and Collections Officer, and they researched lighting styles of the era and what would be appropriate for this building during the mid 1850s.

Thank you to Benjamin Moore.
