2009 ~ Whodunit?: The Backroom Back Stab

Backwoods Players

Event sponsorOPG

WhodunitDates: July 11, 12, 18, 19, 2009

An interactive murder mystery dinner theatre experience. The world of backroom politics in the late 60s is the setting for murder in this year's Whodunit? The Minister of Finance has died and the candidates hoping to win his seat in the House have gathered at a country inn in New Brunswick for a convention. Things go off the rails when a murder is committed. The delegates at the convention turn from electing an M.P. to solving a murder … and there are no shortages of motives.

CLUES:

  • Clue 4: Did Wilfrid really not go to Haight / Ashbury while he was in San Francisco?
  • Clue 3: If you play O Canada backwards you may hear a candidate’s name.
  • Clue 2: How did one of the candidates acquire a leg injury that still causes him/her to limp some weeks later?
  • Clue 1: The venue for the convention was suspiciously changed at the last moment.

This event is a fundraiser hosted and performed by Backwoods Players for Pickering Museum Village Foundation's Brougham Central Hotel Restoration Project.

  • Tickets are $50 each and include dinner (see menu below).
  • A tax receipt will be issued for a portion of the ticket price.

Guests should come regardless of weather since weather patterns in northern Pickering are rarely the same as the south, east and west neighbouring areas. If heavy rain occurs at any time, there will be a 30 min. delay. If after 30 min. rain does not end, we will cancel the show. If lightning occurs, the show is stopped immediately, and will resume when lightning has ceased. There are no rain dates.

Backwoods Players came into existence in 2000 as a natural offspring of the Pickering Museum Village's annual production of "A Spirit Walk". This award-winning play tells the story of Pickering's early settlers and their involvement in the ill-fated Rebellion of 1837. Backwoods and "A Spirit Walk" have been the proud recipients of the 2001 City of Pickering Civic Award for Culture and the Arts, and the Durham Arts Council "Acorn" Award.

Today Backwoods has over 150 members of all ages, and stages a variety of productions, ranging from murder mystery dinner theatre to improv comedy / romance set in 1875 and the high drama of "A Spirit Walk".  Backwoods specializes in period theatre and is proud to feature original materials, often with a basis in local history. Most productions are staged on site at the Pickering Museum Village, either outdoors or in 19th century buildings. For more information go to the museum village page at the City of Pickering's website.
